Why We Appreciate the Can
Beer Can Appreciation Day, celebrated on January 24, is all about recognizing the invention of the humble aluminum can. Cans allow beer to travel more responsibly than glass bottles, making them a more sustainable choice for us the brewery and for the drinker. Lightweight, durable, and infinitely recyclable, aluminum cans help us reduce transportation impact while keeping beer fresh and protected from light and oxygen and make them more friendly on the environment and able to travel with us in packs, canoes, and hands (of course).
But cans aren’t just practical—they’re fun. They invite us to enjoy beer from a can wherever life takes you, whether that’s the shoreline, the trailhead, or the backyard. For some, that enjoyment turns into can collecting; for others, it sparks curiosity about the history of beer can art and how design has evolved alongside brewing itself.
At the heart of Bent Paddle’s can art is graphic designer Lucas Kackman, the creative mind behind all of our can designs and visual graphics. Lucas brings each beer to life through thoughtful design, using modern printing technology that allows artwork to be printed directly onto aluminum. His work transforms every can into a small-scale art piece—one that tells the story of the beer inside while staying true to Bent Paddle’s creative spirit.
